Hall of Fame Inductees
Gwen Sturgeon Francis, Contributor/Coach (1971-1978 1985-2010)
Gwen Sturgeon Francis came to Southern Local in the fall of 1971 as a physical education and English teacher. Other interesting contributions she made to Southern Local early on included: officiating volleyball games, selling tickets to sports events, and even coaching track. Gwen was senior class advisor, yearbook advisor, revived the Blue and Gold newspaper, and was the voice of the pep rallies, homecomings and proms for many years. She also began the annual Veterans Day assemblies. Anything she could do for the students, she did.
Laura Thorne, Athlete (Class of 2003)
Laura Thorne was a four year letter winner in softball. Laura's junior and senior years, she led the team in stolen bases. Senior year, Laura's on base percentage was .550 and her batting average was .400. Awards Laura received for her efforts included: 9th grade - Coaches Award and All County Honorable Mention; 10th grade - Defensive Award; 11th grade - Defensive Award and Tri-County League All Star selection; 12th grade - Offensie Award and Tri-County League All Star selection.
Lance Weston, Athlete (Class of 1995)
Lance Weston was a two sport athlete at Southern Local. Lance excelled at both basketball (three letter winner) and track (record setting relay team). The honors Lance received in basketball were; 1st Team All-County for three years; 1st Team All-Area, and Honorable Mention All Northeast Ohio. School records Lance set included: most points in a single game with 47, most pontes in a season with 490 and most three point shots in a game with 6. An enthusiastic track member, Lance was part of the record setting 4 X 2 relay team. Their record still stands!
