Helen Beatty, Contributor (1968-2007)
A graduate of Maryville College in Tennessee, Helen came to Southern Local to teacher math in 1968. Helen's activities at Southern have been many and varied. Helen did all the of the following: attendance person, Tri-Beta Advisor, National Honor Society advisor, cheerleading advisor, athletic director, pap band director, sold tickets at game, officiated volleyball games, kept scorebook for boys basketball, drove bus for extra-curricular activities, and has been a constant presence at all Southern Local athletic events for the past 39 years. Helen received awards for being a contributor to the athletic and academic areas for Southern Local students were STAR Educator in 2006 and OHSAA's State Award in 2001 and 2004.
Cathy Barrett Green, Athlete (Class of 1980)
Cathy Barrett Green earned four varsity letters in track for running. She set records in the 100 yard and meter dash, 100 yard and meter hurdles, and the 440m and 800m relays. Three years, Cathy received the High Point Sprint Award MVP in Track. Cathy received numerous awards, they include: TCL 1st place in 100m, 200m, and 400m relay; Indian League high point 100 H and 400m relay; District Qualifier in the 100m, 200m, 400m relay, and District 3rd place, class A in long jump. She also qualified for the State Track Meet in the 440 relay team. Cathy's relay team still holds the school record of 52.1 second.s

Will Johnston, Athlete (Class of 1991)
Will Johnston received nine varsity letters during his time at Southern Local. Will received four in football, four in basketball and one in track. Will received numerous awards for his accomplishments in football and basketball. Well received the following basketball awards: unanimous choice for 1st Team TCL, All County 1st Team, Honorable Mention Northeast Inland District, 1st Team Morning Journal and Evening Review Teams, the Columbiana County All Star Classic. In football, Will started in all 40 games and received the following awards: All County 2nd Team Punter, All Northeastern Ohio Honorable Mention Quarterback, All County and TCL 1st Team Defensive Back, All County 2nd Team Punter, All Northeastern Ohio Honorable Mention, and the Penn-Ohio All Star Game. As a quarterback, he hold records for Most Attempts Career (454), Most Completions (156) and Total Yardage (2,721).
Terry Kellison, Athlete (Class of 1971)
Terry Kellison earned five varsity letters, three in baseball and two in basketball; along with being a Top 5 Finisher in the Buckeye Border Conference in golf as a freshman. (The only year Southern had a golf team back then.) Terry received several prestigious awards: All Area, All County, 1st Team, All Buckeye Border Conference (the only unanimous selection) and MVP in basketball in 1971.
Jimmy Sargent, Athlete (Class of 1982)
Jimmy Sargent received nine varsity letters, four in football, four in baseball and one in basketball. In football his senior year, Jimmy received 1st Team TCL, 1st Team All County, 1st Team Evening Review, 1st Team Salem News Dream Team, and All State honors. Records Terry held at one point in time were most yards passing in a year (1200) and in a career, most touchdown passes in a season and in a career. The records Terry still holds are for Most Pass attempts in a game (16) and in a season (68), most yards passed in a game (215) and in a season (1130).
Bruce Whittaker, Athlete (Class of 1979)
We're not exactly sure, but it is quite possible that Bruce Whittaker is the only person in Southern Local history to be named to both the Offense and Defense TCL 1st Team in football. While at Southern Local, Bruce earned five varsity letters, three in football, one each in basketball and baseball. He started both ways on the 1975 TCL Championship football team and was named 1st Team All TCL Defense and Honorable Mention All State Defense. Bruce also started both ways on the 703 1976 team. That year, he was named 1st Team TDL on Offense as well as 1st Team All County. In baseball, he was named Defensive Player of the Year 1977.
