Bryant Nestor, (Class of 2007), Athlete
Bryant Nestor was a three sport athlete. He received three varsity letters in football and baseball and one varsity letter in basketball. Bryant started as a full-back and defensive end three years in a row. His football awards included: three times Quad County All Star, sophomore year 2nd Team TCL defense, junior year 1st Team TCL defense, and senior year 1st Team ITCL defense and 1st Team Northeast Inland District Defensive End. He also started in the MVAC All Star game. Bryant was co-captain of the 2006 team which broke a losing streak that had extended since 1978. His statistics were: 1661 total rushing yards; 14 touchdowns; 184 tackles; 18 sacks; 32 quarterback hurries; 12 pass deflections; 32 tackles for a loss and 89 confirmed pancake blocks. Coach Alex Albert said of Bryant that he was "a strong defensive player who defined controlling his side of the line!"
Bryan also started every baseball game from his sophomore year through his senior year. He had a combined total batting average of .354 and had 44 RBI's.
Eric Baker, (Class of 2011), Athlete
Eric Baker is a two sport athlete. He received recognition for both football and basketball. In football, Eric was a crucial part of the first Southern Local team to make the playoffs. His honors include: 2nd Team Defense; All Area Team East Liverpool Review; and Honorable Mention All Area.
Eric excelled on the basketball court. He averaged 17.5 points per game, 12.2 rebounds per gamed 2.2 blocks per game. His honors include: 1st Team ITCL, 1st Team Evening Review, 1st Team Morning Journal, 1st Team All Columbiana County, 1st Team All Northeast Inland District and Special Mention All State.
Josh Melhorn, (Class of 2011), Athlete
Josh Melhorn was an outstanding football player with an exceptional work ethic. Josh was the only four year letter winner in the Class of 2011 in football. His senior year, he was a member of the first football to make the playoffs. Josh contributed to both the Offensive and Defensive teams. Offense, he had 508 yards rushing, six touchdowns and 113 carries averaging 4.5 yards per carry. On defense, he had 97 tackles. The defense held opponents to only 12.5 points per game.
Josh's honors include: Rookie of the Year; Mr. Versatility, Record for the most fumbles in a season, 1st Team Quad County, 1st Team Northeast Inland District, 1st Team Morning Journal, 1st Team Evening Review, and All State Honorable Mention. Josh was the team captain his senior year. He was also the Penn-Ohio All Star nominee. Josh also received an MVP award for weightlifting.
Zack Puckett, (Class of 2012), Athlete
Zack Puckett earned six varsity letters while participating in baseball (1), track (1), and football (4). Zack was an exceptional football player. The teams on which he participated went 27-13 including making the playoffs for the first time in school history. Zack had the longest run from the line of scrimmage at 91 yards. He had 1879 rushing yards (2053 all purpose yards).
Awards Zack received from his coaches include: Rookie of the Year, Axe Award, Matt Puckett Award, and the Soaring Eagle Award. Other awards include: 1st Team Morning Journal, 1st Team Review, 1st Team ITCL, Big 22 Player of the Year candidate, and All Ohio Division Five Special Mention.
Madilyn Dowling Wrask, (Class of 2012), Athlete
Maddy Dowling Wrask is only the third athlete in Southern Local history to earn twelve varsity letters. In volleyball, Maddy broke the record for Career Aces (135+) and Career Points (420+). She received awards every year but her senior year. She was named: 1st Team ITCL, 1st Team District 1, 1st Team Evening Review, and 2nd Team All Columbiana County.
In basketball, she holds the Career Block Shot record with 207. She received basketball awards every year including: 2nd Team ITCL; 2nd Team All County; Special Mention All Northeast Inland District; and Honorable Mention from both the Review and the Morning Journal.
In softball, she set a record of seven wins in a season and received 2nd Team ITCL.
